More Registration Information

- Use the child's name to register.
- Program spots are limited and have age restrictions. Once a program fills, patrons will be placed on a waiting list and contacted only if there is room in the program.
- Priority is given to residents of the Nyack School District.
- Residents outside of the Nyack School District may register for remaining program spots after Nyack School District patrons.
- Please notify us directly by phone of cancellations.
- Programs are designed for the intended age group.
- Registration is required for all programs (unless noted otherwise).
- All programs are free!

The Valley Cottage Library is a proud champion of Nyack Basics!
The Nyack Basics Campaign is a communitywide collaboration of organizations and individuals partnering to ensure every child has the opportunity to succeed. The Nyack Basics are five child caring principles that can be used with babies and toddlers every day to help them grow and thrive.

ONGOING PROGRAMS

1000 Books Before Kindergarten: This program promotes reading to newborns, infants, toddlers, and children up to Kindergarten. The goal is to have read 1000 books before your child starts Kindergarten. Stop by the Children’s Room any time to sign up, get more information, and your first reading record.

‘Turn the Pages’ interactive book display

A great big “Thank You” and “Congratulations” to our patron Isabella Feeney for creating ‘Turn the Pages’ interactive book display as her Gold Award Girl Scout project! Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers are invited to recommend great books using this permanent display in the Children’s Room. Younger children are invited to look at the display and take home a recommended book or two. If they bring back the included sheet telling librarians why they liked the book, they will get a prize for participating. Middle and High School kids will earn community service hours for making recommendations. Stop by to learn more!

Give a Kid a Book

Between October 1 and November 1, the Children’s Room will collect new, unused books for the Library Association of Rockland County’s Youth Services. Books will be given as gifts to children through local charities during the holidays.

Not your traditional storytime! We’ll explore books and stories through a variety of avenues, including listening to music, playing with story toys, and moving around. A welcoming storytime for all children.

Wizard Academy with David Engel

Saturday, Oct. 27 at 10:30am
Ages 3-10.

Wear your Halloween costume for an entertaining visit from the Hogwarts Academy’s bumbling Professor Hackensneeze, his furry sidekick Mortimer, and a talking troll or two! This loony Professor of Wizardry will lead children on a zany day-in-the-life of a ‘Wizard in Training,’ using magic potion recipes, wands, and hilarious slapstick antics.

Drop in anytime for playtime geared especially for tiny tots. The Storytime Room will have early development toys, puzzles, books, and activities for babies and toddlers to discover and learn. Meet other caregivers in the community while your little one explores!

This playful class led by Sue Haberman will get children moving and engage their imagination through simple yoga poses combined with music, props and games. Increased body awareness, attention span, energy release and relaxation are just some of the benefits of this fun class!

Books will be available at the Children’s Room Desk one week prior to the program.

Oct. 15: Halloween Night, by Arden Druce. We’ll read the book together, then decorate a pumpkin to take home.


Nov. 19: Pumpkin Time! by Erzsi Deak. We’ll read the book together, then make a Thanksgiving craft.


Dec. 10: Pablo in the Snow, by Teri Sloat. We’ll read the book together, then create a craft to welcome winter.

We will take apart an LED tea light and see how it works. Then we’ll use the candle to turn an ordinary ping pong ball into a glowing Halloween decoration!
