Children Services - Sensory Storytime
What is Sensory Storytime?

Sensory Storytime is a program that combines the books, songs, and movement activities of a typical preschool storytime with therapeutic activities from Sensory Integration. Our goal is for all children and caregivers to have a welcoming and fun experience exploring stories, while also seeing the benefits of including songs and rhymes into Sensory Integration technique. This technique is commonly used for children with autism spectrum disorders, or children who may have trouble processing sensory information. For instance, therapists may use it to help a child improve upon issues like balance, co-ordination, and proprioception.

This half hour storytime is a wonderful way for children of all abilities to explore the fun of stories in a program that will include lots of opportunities for movement and participation. We incorporate various therapeutic sensory elements such as soft felt items, stretchy bands, beanbags, and scarves. Families are encouraged to participate at the level at which their child feels comfortable.

About our storytime and room:
-Our room has a forest theme in color and decoration. We also have a mural of a train station on the wall. Children may feel free to explore the mural! It even has some hidden pictures you may spot.
-The room does not have fluorescent lighting, and has a large window for natural light.
-Any items we pass out may be given back at the end of the song/ activity, or if your child feels more comfortable hanging on to it during the storytime they may do so.

In the attachments below, we have provided a visual tour of our Children’s Room, as well as a narrative about coming to storytime. We hope you and your family enjoy our room tour, and we hope to see you in the library soon.
