SUMMER READING CLUB starts June 20!

Please keep in mind...

  • Register in the Children's Room or call 845-268-7700 during library hours.

  • All programs are free, and priority is given to residents of the Nyack School District. Group size is limited. Residents outside of the Nyack School District will be placed on a waiting list and contacted only if there is room in the program.

  • Please notify us of cancellations in order to allow more children to attend our programs.

  • Programs are designed for the intended age group.

  • Please make alternate arrangements for other children for infant and toddler programs.

  • Required registration begins at least one week before each program.

    SPRING 2015 FAMILY PROGRAMS

    1000 Books Before Kindergarten: This program promotes reading to newborns, infants, toddlers, and children up to Kindergarten. The goal is to have read 1000 books before your child starts Kindergarten. Stop by the Children’s Room any time to sign up, get more information, and your first reading record.







    The Fun and Funny Juggling Show
    Monday, June 1 at 5:30pm
    Ages 2 and up.
    Join comedian Will Shaw for an entertaining show with juggling, balance tricks, boomerangs, cowboy rope tricks, music, sight gags, clowning, and plenty of audience participation.
    Registration required - Free tickets available starting 5/24.

    Matty Roxx Music
    Friday, June 5 at 10:30am
    Ages 6 and under.
    Join kids’ “musician & funster” Matty Roxx for a lively program filled with music, bubbles and laughs!

    Teddy Bear Stories
    Thursday, June 18 at 6pm
    Ages 2 and up with adult(s).
    You can wear your PJs and bring your favorite snuggly friend for this night-time Family Storytime. Fun for the whole family!

    Mondays from 10am-1pm
    Ages 5 and under. It’s play time in the Storytime Room, no matter what the weather brings! A great chance to meet other local families while you enjoy books, games, toys and puzzles with your little one(s).

    Yoga for Kids
    Wednesday, June 3 at 10:30am. (Rescheduled from May 27)
    Ages 18 mos.- 5 years.
    Join Valerie Vendrame as she returns for a lively and fun introductory yoga class for children. Children should wear comfortable clothes.

    LEGOs™ at the Library

    Grades 2-6.
    Focusing on a different theme each month, we’ll have fun building with friends to show off our imaginations, and then share our creation’s story with the group. LEGOs™ will be displayed temporarily in the library.

    Learn to Juggle!

    Everyone can juggle! Come and learn the amusing art of juggling with comedian and juggling expert Will Shaw! Then stay and enjoy Will’s ‘Fun and Funny Juggling Show’ at 5:30 (separate registration required - see Family Programs).

    SUMMER READING CLUB: Every Hero Has a Story

    Join the Valley Cottage Library’s Summer Reading Club!

    June 20-August 22.

    Heroes Kickoff Carnival
    Saturday, June 20 from 10:30am – 12:30pm
    All ages.
    Dress as your favorite hero and come and enjoy games, snacks and fun to kick off the Summer Reading Club!
    Reg. starts 6/6.

    In person and online registration begins JUNE 20, along with logging of books and days read.

    The Summer Reading Club is open to all children from infants to children entering 5th grade.

    Daily reading habits help children retain information they have learned. Readers will keep track of the number of days that they do some reading. They will also write down the titles they read. Younger non-readers can record Early Literacy Activities that they do together with an adult.

    Everyone will turn in their reading/activity logs at the library to receive prizes.

    Thank a Hero Letter Station
    June 20-August 22
    Stop by and write a letter thanking a hero! Whether it’s your parent, a police officer, firefighter, veteran, teacher, or someone else special, everyone loves to be appreciated.

    Collection Box for Military Heroes
    June 20-August 22
    Drop off useful items for our military heroes deployed overseas and the library will ship them. Suggested items include toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, nuts, playing cards, Granola/energy bars, magazines, baby wipes, Chex Mix, and powdered drink mix singles such as Crystal Light and Gatorade.

    Superhero Training Academy, with David Engel as Sgt. Major MAJOR
    Wednesday, July 1 at 7pm
    Ages 4 and up.
    Dress as your favorite hero for a silly training with Sgt. Major MAJOR, as he challenges the reflexes, eyesight, strength, and ‘noodles’ of the most valiant Do-Gooders in the audience. This ‘action-clown’ show features on-their-feet participation, nonsensical competitions and a laugh-riot as kids are empowered to fight crime across the Universe!

    VALCon
    Saturday, July 18 from 11am-4pm
    Ages 3 and up
    Join us for ValCon, the first comic and anime Library Convention in Rockland County. It is free and open to all. Join us for panels, workshops, cosplay, contests, special guests, an artist alley, a vendor alley, and more! In the Children’s Room, learn to draw your favorite comic characters from Angelo DeCesare, comic book illustrator and author of Flip’s Fantastic Journals! No registration.

    Super Hero Luncheon, with Manda’s Enchanted Events
    Saturday, July 25 at 11:30am
    Ages 3 and up.
    Calling all Super Heroes! Come dressed as your favorite superhero and train to become part of the Avengers Initiative. After training, we’ll eat pizza, then you’ll meet your favorite superhero for a photo together, and receive your official certificate to bring home.

    Oceans Rock!
    Thursday, August 6 at 6:30pm
    Ages 3 and up.
    Be an Eco-Superhero! Learn about ocean life and conservation of this important part of our environment, as children see and touch museum-quality sea creature specimens and ancient fossils. They'll do a Fossil Dig and bring home genuine shells, shark teeth, sea glass and other sea treasures.

    Craft Week
    August 10-14 from 2-4pm
    Ages 3 and up with adult(s).
    Drop in to create a cool Superhero craft! A different project each day. No registration.

    Hero Treasure Hunt
    August 17-22
    Ages 3 and up with adult(s).
    Hunt for special clues in the Children’s Room to be a hero and save the library’s precious books from destruction! Get a prize if you find them all to save the day!

    Meet Andrew Simmons, a hero to wild animals. Andrew will fascinate children with a Golden Eagle, an American Alligator, a Ring-Tailed Lemur, and more, in an exciting program focused on teaching children to care about and preserve animal species and their habitats.

    Book Club: Strega Nona Takes a Vacation *

    We’ll read Strega Nona Takes a Vacation by Tomie DePaola together. We’ll discuss this story, listen to another Strega Nona story, and plant herbs in pots to take home.

    Book Club: Dog Diaries *
    Monday, August 3 at 5pm
    Entering Grades 2-6
    Come and enjoy stories about 3 amazing real life heroes! Read one of the Dog Diaries series by Kate Klimo. Choose Barry, the St. Bernard who rescued many people in the Alps, Togo, the Siberian Husky who brought life-saving diphtheria serum to the people of Nome, Alaska, or Buddy, the German Shepherd who was the first trained seeing eye dog in the U.S.
